Exactly 3 years ago STEVENS developed the first cyclocross bikes fitted with disc brakes. The occasion was the UCI approval of the powerful disc stoppers for cross-country races. The STEVENS carbon bike, specially designed for the 8-times world champion Hanka Kupfernagel, turned heads at the Eurobike 2013 and at the racing track.
Following the 3 cross models 105 Disc, Vapor, and Super Prestige Disc in the 2013 season, STEVENS expands its range of disc-brake models. In 2014 there will be aluminium models as well as carbon ones with these modern brakes.
Development Engineer Frank Ziemann: "Specifically in connection with light carbon wheels and in wet conditions, disc brakes play in a different league compared to the usual rim brakes. It is well known that the rim as a load bearing part is subject to wear through friction in a standard brake configuration whose braking power deteriorates when wet. Our tests with the discs were very successful. Frames, forks and wheels can score top ranks in weight, stiffness and comfort with disc brakes."
As a teaser for the coming season, we are showing here the first exclusive photos of the Ventoux Disc bike with the new Shimano R785 hydraulic racing brake. The STEVENS Ventoux Disc can be configured and individually assembled in the custom programme. As a serial bike as well as a custom model, the Supreme - a light aluminium bike - completes the STEVENS range. Both models use a 1 1/2" full carbon fork and internal cabling. The serial bike features the new Shimano Ultegra 2*11 Group (cf photo).
Technologically, Shimano is conquering new territory with the R785 brake concerning the integration of the hydraulics into the shift/brake lever. The high-end brake offers extremely good heat dissipation and optimal braking power in connection with the RT99 Icetech Rotor (Front: 160mm, rear optionally 140 or 160mm) and Centerlock linkage. The shift/brake lever fits slightly more forward than the mechanical levers and can be combined with the electronic Shimano Di2 shift (Ultegra or Dura Ace 2*11). The combination of the MTB proven Shimano disc brake with the leading racing bike gearshift is impressive: lightning fast shifting and finely modulated yet high braking power are without a doubt the pinnacle of modern racing bike technology.
"3 years ago, there were only a few visionaries who could think of disc brakes on racing bikes. STEVENS is uniquely positioned to set trends with their cross-country experience and the award-winning current racing bikes. We are systematically putting this to use," says Brand Manager Volker Dohrmann.
The official premiere of these innovative bikes is taking place at the Eurobike in Friedrichshafen (28 - 31 August, open access day: 31 August). During the next weeks, STEVENS will be giving additional glimpses of the collection, to shorten the waiting time.
