Mathieu van der Poel became world champion today aboard his STEVENS Super Prestige in special camouflage design – at 20 years old he is the youngest elite class world champion of all time. Winning this event, the pro ‘cross rider of Team BKCP Powerplus acquired his second Gold Medal after the Netherlands’ National Championships in the beginning of January.
STEVENS Vertriebs GmbH congratulates the ‘Cross Champion from the bottom of their heart, a delegation from the company cheered to all STEVENS bike riders in the field or supported them in the pit zone. Riders from six nations participated in the event, starting for STEVENS Racing Team, Corendon-Kwadro and BKCP-Powerplus.
Several good placings are added to Mathieu van der Poel’s Gold Medal: Only a couple of hours earlier Laurens Weeck secured Silver in the U-23 race. Sanne Cant of team BKCP-Enertherm will also start riding a STEVENS Super Prestige from April on, so her Silver Medal in the women’s elite race is also very interesting from STEVENS’ perspective.
STEVENS‘ CEO Wolfgang von Hacht said after the race: “Atmosphere and the level of performance in a World Championship are always incredible. We have seen fantastic sports. STEVENS had a lot of riders at the starting line, and we can be pleased with the number of won medals. Our teams feature a lot of professionalism and also a good spirit and strong company. That’s why we as a supplier enjoy being present at the events. Mathieu is a true talent, who at only 20 years of age was able to drop veterans and experienced youngsters alike.
Remarkable performances were given also by the Germans Marcel Meisen (Corendon-Kwadro) und Philipp Walsleben (BKCP-Powerplus) placing 8th ad 9th respectively and Swiss National Champion Julien Taramarcaz (Corendon-Kwadro), who came in 11th. STEVENS Racing Team’s own riders made a good impression, especially Ludwig Cords, who finished a very good 18th in the Juniors’ race after suffering a crash and a consequential chain suck.
Only a couple of days prior to the vent, discussions arose about Mathieu van der Poel and if he should start in the U-23 or the Elite category. Christoph Roodhooft, manager of teams BKCP-Powerplus and Corendon-Kwadro, said: ”Mathieu showed what he is capable of and that the decision was right. We are very happy about the World Champion Jersey. Laurens was unlucky with a crash and like Sanne Cant was rewarded under-value with a Silver Medal.”
Volker Dohrmann, STEVENS brand and marketing manager, said: ”For all the Belgian racing teams we support I thought everything between zero and three Gold Medals would have been possible. But a World Championship follows its own rules. Our athletes performed first class, their material worked well. Especially the Shimano disc brakes proved great. Now our painters will work on another World-Champion Signature design for Mathieu.”
