Lennard Kämna of Team Stölting can look back on a successful Giro della Valle d’Aosta (UCI 2.2) 2015: He won the fourth of five stages and took second place at the time trial on the first race day on his STEVENS Super Trofeo. Furthermore, the 18 year old German Champion in the U23-category also took eleventh place in the overall results.
The tour leading through the Aosta Valley in Italy as well as the French Haute-Savoie region covers five stages and is one of the most important U-23 tours.
At the initial time trial Kämna was only 18 seconds behind the winner, Robert Power (of the Australian national team). On stage four from Pollein to Saint Christophe covering 152 kilometers, the rider of team Stölting was able to break away from the leading group comprising 13 riders on his STEVENS Xenon and won the stage 1:04 minutes ahead of his chasers after riding 30 kilometers alone in front. The Italians Edward Rawasi and Simone Velasco took places two and three.
Kämnas team colleague Silvio Herklotz helped a lot in this stage win, said team manager Jochen Hahn in an interview with radsport-news.com. The team captain rode in the leading group together with Kämna, deflected attacks of the other riders and weakened them with break away efforts. “Today Silvio put himself completely at the service of Lennard. It was a great performance of him, too. And Lennard finished it off in a great manner”, Hahn summarized.
The manager of team Stölting added: “Silvio still lacks performance peaks a little as he could ride only a few races lately. This is why we decided to withhold him a little and to focus on this very day.” Herklotz had been suffering from knee injury in spring and from a bad cold in the run-up to the German Championships.
On Saturday, on the fith stage covering 86 kilometers including the Great St. Bernhard Pass (2,459 meters), Kämna took eleventh place – just like in the overall results. Winner of the tour was Robert Power, Laurens de Plus took second, Simone Petilli third place. In the team category team Stölting took a good fifth place of 13 teams all in all including some national U23 teams (Norway, Australia, USA) as well as the junior teams of World Tour teams.
