Home victory for Petra Kurikova at Ironman 70.3

Just a few days after attending at the Olympic Games in Paris, STEVENS athlete Petra Kurikova was back on the starting line – at the Ironman 70.3 European Tour in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic.

The Ironman 70.3 is a triathlon race series organized by the World Triathlon Corporation. A race consists of 1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of individual time trials and 21.1 kilometers of running. The name of the series is derived from the total distance of 113 kilometers (or 70.3 miles).

Petra was the only athlete in the pro category to ride a racing bike and not a special time trial bike. The only modification to her STEVENS Arcalis Aero Road Bike was a time trial handlebar for an even more aerodynamic seating position. With this equipment, she achieved the second fastest time in the women's pro field. On the final running distance, Petra took another four minutes off second-placed Laura Addie and secured her first victory in an Ironman 70.3.

After crossing the finish line, the overjoyed Petra commented: "I trained hard for the Olympic Games in Paris. Things didn't work out as I wanted there. The race in Hradec Kralove showed that I'm in good shape. I'm very happy to have won my first 70.3 distance."
