In their most recent test (July 2015) RoadBIKE gave proof that the STEVENS Ventoux can also excel in a quite reasonably priced test field, custom-specced with Shimano 105 group and Mavic Aksium wheels.
The editors asked: ”Reasonably priced and comfortable – can this actually work?” so they compared nine carbon-framed touring road bikes.
The answer: Yes, reasonably priced and comfortable works – the STEVENS Ventoux 105 is best in test among the retail store bikes and is awarded with an A+ (”very good”).
One of the Ventoux’s major benefits is its low frame weight. ”The lightest frameset in test is made by Stevens”, says RoadBIKE, its vertical compliance is alright, but that is not what matters most with the Ventoux. With its ”slightly stretched-out riding position and precise steering” it is more sports-oriented than most other bikes in the test field.
RoadBIKE continues: ”Due to its long wheelbase it keeps its track very securely, which makes it perfect for long tours and riding in high mountains.” The Mavic Aksium wheels provide motivating acceleration. They are the third lightest wheelset in test. Weighing in at 1,448 grams (3lbs., 7oz.) the frameset is the lightest. All in all the STEVENS Ventoux weighs 7.8kg (17lbs., 3oz.).
Thick bar tape and tires of at least 25mm width have become standard with reasonably priced comfort road bikes. The same goes for the STEVENS Ventoux 105. The editors recommend moderate gears like compact cranks. The Ventoux’s 105 cranks features semi-compact gears with a 52/36 T chainring combination. This way, comfortable marathon race bikes like the STEVENS Ventoux 105 can prove their strength ”on every single kilometer”, because they iron-out road bumps reliably.
Conclusion: ”The lightweight frame demands speed. Stevens supplies a fast-reacting sports bike for ambitious touring riders that always knows to convince – best retail store bike in test.”
The STEVENS Ventoux specced as tested is available from the STEVENS Custom Program. This is the starting price in the STEVENS Modular System. The Ventoux can be equipped with nine component groups, eleven wheelsets, with personal choice crank length, gear selection, handlebar shape and width and is available in seven sizes and three different paintjobs.
