Victor de la Parte has just won the 67. International Tour of Austria (UCI 2.HC) on STEVENS Xenon. The Spaniard riding for Team Vorarlberg took the Yellow Jersey by winning the sixth of eight stages, at Kitzbüheler Horn with an ascent averaging 17 percent on the last seven kilometres.
De la Parte, who is an expert on tour riding as well as on climbing, already won the fourth stage covering 208 kilometres and 3,500 metres in altitude, and took the Mountains Jersey.
It was also due to the great performance of the other team riders – Daniel Paulus, Patrick Jäger, Andreas Walzel, Daniel Lehner, Nicolas Baldo, Clément Koretzky und Grischa Janorschke – that the Continental Team from the Vorarlberg region was able to defend the Yellow Jersey against World Tour Teams like Saxo Tinkoff, BMC, AG2R La Mondiale or Katusha and turn this sceneric tour into the biggest victory of their 17 years of team history.
Daniel Lehner obtained a first decent result when winning the Mountains Jersey and Clément Koretzky, who unfortunately had to quit the race after a crash, positioned himself well on stages two (15.) and three (10.).
On the final stage between Innsbruck and Bregenz the team brought Victor de la Parte to the foot of Hahntennjoch in its slipstream. On top of the mountain, 14 kilometres further at a maximum ascent of 15 percent, the best 25 climbers were among themselves.
In the following and last ascent things once again got exciting when six riders broke away, among them Egor Silin (Katusha) who was only three minutes behind in the overall ranking. In the descend to Bregenz, the peloton in which Victor de la Parte was riding, managed to catch them again, however, leading to the last stage of the 67. Tour of Austria being decided in a mass sprint. Winner of this stage was Moreno Moser (Cannondale-Garmin), followed by David Tanner (IAM) and Clement Venturini (Cofidis).
The scenery in Bregenz was impressive with thousands of cycling enthusiasts cheering for Team Vorarlberg – what a day! „It was amazing what the guys achieved here. Victor is the deserved winner. Many teams congratulated us. We did not expect such a success, it makes us even more happy and proud. I am especially proud of the team behind the team – a real “Dream Team”, rejoiced team manager Thomas Kofler.
