It’s been the second time that a STEVENS Sonora ES found its way into Bikefreak-Magazine’s office. But this time the ”2017 Sonora ES model has matured. It now uses wider boost hubs, its geometry has been improved and it’s spec’d with the new spectacular Shimano Deore Di2 group”, were the editors’ reasons for the new test.
The frame of the Sonora ES Di2 looked slimmer, the flattened top tube makes it appear more elegant and room was made to accommodate wider – and therefore stiffer – boost hubs. ”Shift and brake cables now are routed inside the frame. This looks good and prevents them from becoming dirty”, were some of the testers first impressions.
They also liked the weight: ”The weight of 10.6kg (23.4lbs) proves that STEVENS can indeed create a light hardtail” – and this utilizing a frame which is light, stiff and full of high-quality details, in short: state-of-the-art.
The new seat angle of now 70 degrees would increase ride comfort, the bike was secure to steer especially in (fast) downhill sections.
Yet, the bike would also climb a little slower than its predecessor, which, according to the authors, made it optimal for marathons and fast cross-country circuits.
”The slightly shorter chainstays as well as the fork with 100mm of travel plus remote lock-out deliver a comfortable ride”, the testers praised the bike. Brakes, wheels and tires were just perfectly matched to the bike’s intended use. ”There is nothing to complain about.”
In the field test the Sonora Di2 all in all left a positive impression, especially weight, specs and craftsmanship were to the testers’ liking.
Conclusion: The STEVENS Sonora ES for sure is not cheap in the electronic version but it’s a real fast, well-spec’d marathon mountain bike.
The STEVENS Sonora ES Di2 in Team Black is available in sizes 16in (with size-appropriate 27.5” wheels) and with 29” wheels in sizes 18, 20 and 22in for 3,499 Euros. Spec’d with the mechanical Shimano XT group on the same platform the STEVENS Sonora ES sells for 2,699 Euros.
