Touring road bikes were by far the best choice for hobby road cyclists concludes RoadBIKE magazine after testing long-distance road bikes. They offered a not too stretched-out seating position but still road bike-typical handling. Due to their relatively wide tires and vertically compliant frames they were also more comfortable on longer rides.
The STEVENS Comet Disc was on the sportier side of the test field. At 944 grams for the frame it was the only bike in test whose frame weighs less than a kilogram. The Comet Disc also featured the lowest overall weight, at 7.1 kg in frame size 56 it was 800 grams lighter than the closest competitor. The editors took STEVENS’ top model as an example to prove that a road bike with hydraulic disc brakes does not need to be a heavy-weight.
The Comet Disc’s number one position in the weight category was the result of the specs chosen from the Custom Configurator: The Shimano Dura Ace drivetrain with compact gears (50/34 teeth cranks and 11-30 teeth cassette), light DT-Swiss PR-1600 wheels and a carbon finishing kit from Ritchey were all contributing factors. Overall, the Comet missed the test win by a single point but was awarded best grades in the categories frame weight, overall weight, wheelset, specs, handling and climbing.
In addition to its specs the Comet Disc excelled on the road with a “convincing performance”: While, according to the report, the seating position was rather race-like for a marathon bike, the rider was awarded with “an urge to move forward, uphill-quickness and an overall very comfortable and balanced handling - absolutely recommended for ambitious riders.”
The STEVENS Comet Disc is available in sizes 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, and 60 cm in Ink Black starting at 3,099 Euros from the STEVENS Custom Configurator. The tested version sells for 5,135 Euros. The frame set costs 1,999 Euros.
