The first task for the new Comet Disc in the TOUR single-bike review in their 11.2017 issue was to hop on the scales: Exactly 7.0 kg (15lbs, 7oz) is what it said on the display. This was the third best weight for a hydraulic disc brake-equipped bike ever measured by TOUR – one of the first positive remarks from the editors. Contributing to this weight was the frame weighing in at 944 grams (2 lbs, 13 oz) including all small parts. For this test the bike had been spec’d with Sram Red e-Tap wireless shifting, lightweight and reliable Ritchey finishing kit and Mavic carbon wheels with 12mm thru-axles.

The test was then taken to the road where the editors noted: ”The Comet Disc is extremely stiff, directionally stable, and the slim Ritchey seatpost noticeably reduces vibration.”

So the Comet is a road bike ”that might instantly win over at least 90 percent of all riders.”
When evaluating the measurements the Comet achieved top marks in head tube stiffness as well as very good results in bottom bracket stiffness and compliance at the seatpost and rear triangle, respectively.

Seating position was moderately race-like, the quite tall head tube literally raised the bar. When you put a suitable number of spacers under the stem it also would qualify as a marathon bike. Handling was perfectly in the middle between ”calm” and ”nimble” while the seating position also was well-balanced.

Custom Assembly In The Configurator
In the STEVENS Custom Configurator you can chose if the fork steerer shall remain uncut. Those who are not sure yet about their eventual seating position are recommended to go for this option and have the fine-tuning performed by their local STEVENS dealer. Because, even when the specs can be selected online: A custom bike can only be ordered from a certified STEVENS dealer.

In accordance to the high-end frameset the Comet featured top-shelf specs. TOUR’s editors especially liked the SRAM e-Tap shifting components actuated by wireless signals which was ”absolutely genius”.

Also the hydraulic disk brakes performed convincingly, their steel discs hardly ever squealed and were very resistant to fading (decrease in braking power when the disc gets hot). The price of more than 8,000 Euros is a benchmark – a custom STEVENS can’t become more expensive. In a typical set-up with Shimano Ultegra group the Comet Disc is available for 3,499 Euros (in Germany). The frameset alone costs approximately 1,999 Euros.

Conclusion: The Comet Disc is light, extremely stiff and its rear triangle offers noticeable comfort. A road bike to instantly win over at least 90 percent of all riders.
