A Matter of Maintenance
Year-round cyclists and long-distance travellers on two wheels have so far been able to tell you how much maintenance such an open-running chain drive requires - at least if its efficiency is to be maintained for as long as possible. And yet hardly any chain lasts longer than 2000-2500km. The Gates belt, on the other hand, which thanks to carbon fibres is extremely strong and low-wear, promises a 5-digit mileage. And instead of regular oiling (read: greasy hands and trouser legs), a little warm water and a brush every few weeks are sufficient to get the drive train back in top shape.
Worthwhile Effort
The fine thing "carbon belt drive" does have one catch - at least for the STEVENS engineers: They have to meet two requirements when designing the frame. Firstly, the rear triangle must be particularly stiff so that the tension of the belt as well as the meticulous alignment of the chainring and rear sprocket are maintained even under high pedal/drive force. And the right chain stay has to be separable for mounting the belt - because, unlike a conventional chain, it is not.
